Kirkland's $500M AI bet, and two named poaches

The biggest BigLaw story today: Kirkland is putting $500 million into building its own AI platform over the next three to four years. 180 tech people are on it, with input from 250 Kirkland lawyers, and the bet is that they can build it themselves rather than buy from Harvey or Legora.

On the lateral side, two stood out: Steptoe picked up a restructuring partner from Barnes & Thornburg in Chicago, and Paul Hastings took an energy and infrastructure partner from King & Spalding in Atlanta.

Around them, Parker Poe in DC, Fox Rothschild in DC, DLA Piper in both San Francisco and Seattle, Holland & Knight in New York healthcare, Hinshaw in Miami, and Gordon Rees rebuilding in LA employment.
